Taming the Beard Beast: Ingredients Matter

We’ve all been there, groggily waking up, stumbling to the bathroom, throwing on the hot water and while you’re waiting for the water to heat up you notice something.

Your beard looks the same day in and day out.

You’ve accepted this because it’s easy.

You’ve accepted this because there’s nothing else to do.

Shampooing your beard has become a recurring practice in the shower. Because, well what other options do you have?

Understanding your skin.

To understand why you shouldn’t use any regular shampoo is to understand what happens at the surface of your skin.

Walton Wood Farm definitely knows what is going on on the surface.

Your skin is producing valuable oils. The sebum oil needs to stay intact because the absence is what creates dry skin. (Or worse, beardruff.)

However, most men are not willing to expand into beard shampoo or even beard balm. Walton Wood Farms has done a great job of contouring to men’s needs in this aspect. Let’s see what happens when you stick with shampoo since it is so easy.

Why is shampooing your face potentially dangerous?

The difference between shampooing your hair, your beard and by consequence your face can be harmful. Chemicals found in shampoo such as Parabens has been found to have long lasting negative effects.

This includes both dermatitis and rosacea. If you ever want to look like you’re blushing or nervous every second of the day, then rosacea is a good look for you. However, most would disagree.

Working in conjunction with Parabens is SLS. (Sodium Lauryl sulfate.) SLS is a known irritate. However, the scariest extreme has been that SLS has been connected to forms of cancer. So, when you decide that using a shampoo is easy, at what expense are you making this decision?

Shampooing your beard can have lasting effects, not just to your face, but what about your appearance?

We’ve all seen the ads that show a perfectly groomed beard.

It’s been cut right, shines and is generally healthy looking. Do you really think shampoo can do that? Most people that have fallen victim to irritation and rosacea never thought it would happen to them. This trap can happen to anyone.

Small ingredients can make the biggest of difference.

So, what makes a beard shampoo and balm different?

Certainly, it’s the ingredients.

Most shampoos differ in only a handful of chemicals.

However, there is more diversity with a quality beard shampoo and beard balm. Just ask the folks over at Walton Wood Farms.

Some of those quality ingredients are meant to heal your beard from the inside out. So, when your beard is looking immaculate, it is not a show. It is because it is healed.

Most quality beard products contain argan oil. This oil does several things; it aims to moisturize and nourish.

The moisturizer is just as important as anything else. Without a properly moisturized beard how can you sustain your beard? When hair is dried out and frayed, what happens? It begins to fall out. It begins subtle and by the time you figure it out, a full shave is in order.

Argan oil also does a great job of nourishing your beard. Moisturizing cannot happen without the nourishing power of argan oil. The nourishment it provides takes everything back to the basics and set everything up to have the best-looking beard around.

Other ingredients include Aloe and Vitamin E.

These two work together to give your beard the fullest look possible.

Aloe provides even more moisture to really give your beard the color and sleek look it deserves. Along with helping moisturize it also strengthens your hair.

The one-two punch that’ll save the day and your beard.

Your beards thickness goes a long way when it comes to looking full and complete. While a beard wash can help, it is only half of the solution. The other part of proper beard care is life after the shower.

A good beard balm doesn’t just make your beard shine like there is no tomorrow, but does more.

Shea butter is what will give your beard the conditioning and shine it deserves. If your beard balm doesn’t have that, then what are you doing to yourself? A good balm also has also has carrier and essential oils. A carrier oil will support the nourishment aspects of the wash, while the essential oils will further help get the most from both your skin and beard follicles.

When you iron a suit, you don’t go over it just once, you go over the same spot at least twice to make sure it’s taken care of. Why treat your beard any differently?

In summation, shampoo may technically work, but does not sustain your beard. Overtime your beard will begin to look spotty, dry and not kept. Oils will be stripped, irritation can happen, easily and not be just a one-time thing. It can be systematic of a bigger problem that is growing.

To avoid these problems why start in the first place?

Beard shampoos and balms can solve your problems before you run into them.

5 Health Problems Men Face in Their 40s

Written By:  Guest Author Peter Minkoff.

Health Problems Men Face in Their 40s

While it is still quite early to speak about old age at 40, this is when most people’s bodies steadily embark on a downward spiral. Even though men are still in their prime during this period, this is where first serious health issues start to take place. Sure, most of these problems may not be clearly visible, but this doesn’t make them any less serious or dangerous. So, without further ado, here are some health problems that men start experiencing as soon as they get past that 40 threshold.
      1. Heart Diseases
According to 2015 statistics, heart diseases alone amount for 17.3 million deaths every year. Seeing how annual death toll amounts to somewhere around 55.3 million, we can see that this is roughly a third of all deaths in the world. Now, even though men after 40 may not feel any changes in their cardiovascular system, this hazard definitely becomes something to look out for. So, if by any chance you experience chest discomfort, pain that spread to the arm or suddenly start feeling light-headed, it might be for the best to talk to a physician.
     2. Colon
Even though problems with one’s bowels may not seem as serious as the aforementioned heart issues, colon problems are not something to be taken lightly. Years of excessive eating, drinking and otherwise lavish lifestyle take their toll and by the time you reach 40, you can start experiencing first problems on this front. So, in case of extreme pain in the area, you might need immediate medical care.
     3. Skin Problems
To a lot of men, skin issues are the last thing on their mind, but this shouldn’t be so. With age, your skin will start losing its elasticity and you may start getting sun spots or even cherry angiomas. This especially goes for men who train a lot or work physically demanding jobs. The only way to deal with this is to give your skin some room to recuperate. One of the methods is purchasing an athlete’s soak, which you can pour into your bath and therefore rejuvenate your skin while relaxing in a tub.
     4. Bone Issues
For both men and women, the age of 30 represents an important threshold. From this moment on, your bones start losing their density, which further leads to an array of uncomfortable problems. By the time you reach 40, the first clear symptoms of this may become visible. While there is no way to reverse this process, leading a healthy lifestyle, eating calcium and vitamin D rich food and exercising a lot during your youth can help you out quite a bit. Unfortunately, those who slacked during their 20s are much more likely to develop osteoporosis.
     5. Dental Problems
Finally, seeing how your entire skeleton will encounter some difficulties, it isn’t surprising that its only visible part (your teeth) will undergo a rough transition as well. Now more than ever, it will be your duty to take care of your dental hygiene, which means not only brushing your teeth a few times a day but flossing as well. Furthermore, it also might be the right time to start seeing your dentist more often. If you have any issues with your teeth, it is vital that you fix them as soon as possible. This especially goes for a simple procedures called gingivitis treatment.
Conclusion
For every year after 40, there is an increased chance that one or all of the aforementioned issues will start pestering you. While some of them may be caused by your previous lifestyle choices, there is still much you can do. Practically, this consists of exercising, eating healthy as well as taking care of your hygiene. After doing this, you can trust your body with all the rest. Still, this requires you to get at least some of these warnings and we hope this short list helped at least a bit.

Watch us Fight the Flames on Dragons’ Den

Join us on October 19th, 2016 at 8 pm EST on CBC to see us battle the Dragons.

Dragons Den Success!

It’s hard to believe it was last April when we filmed this episode. CBC only airs half of the pitchers filmed, so we are thrilled to have been selected to be featured on their “Shop the Den” special. For the uninitiated, Dragons’ Den is the Canadian version of Shark Tank.  Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec actually began their television careers on the show. In fact, they were Dragons for about eight years before they migrated to Shark Tank.

They’re not so scary

You can see by the images, there were some light moments in the den. I can say, it’s a pretty terrifying experience, but it’s not all warfare in there! The Dragons are a tough bunch, but also very nice.

We are just wrapping up design and formula for a product that was inspired by something one of the Dragons said.  It was kind of a big joke at the time, but turned out to be a great product!  See you in the den.

Practicing Slaying the CBC Dragons

I’m practicing every day to slay those shrewd Dragons.  CBC Dragons’ Den gives you about a month to prepare to film the show. We pitch April 24th, but will not be told when we air until two weeks prior.

I’m equal parts excited and terrified. There are no do-overs, after all. All bumbles and goof-ups will be forever etched into the unforgiving archive that is Google. In 2016, the realty is; there is nothing certain in life but death, taxes, and the Internet eternal.  I must know my numbers. I must know my numbers. I must know my numbers.

It’s been so long since I’ve walked in high heels, yesterday I took them for a spin just to make sure I could still do it. Those metal stairs on-set look like they could eat shoes, so a scurried up and down the wooden steps at home about a dozen times. So far, so good.

I practiced my pitch about 1000 times before I realized it was too long by about a factor of two. Rewriting and re-memorizing is the equivalent of shifting into reverse whilst speeding down the Autobahn in an Austin Martin clocking 180 MPH. Cut, splice, cut– must get it down to 1:15. Feels as though I’m cramming a pregnant water buffalo into my carry-on luggage.

10 Things I’m Bringing to My Dragons’ Den Audition

Walton Wood Farm is taking our CPO (Chief Pig Officer), and heading to Kitchener on March 9th to audition for the CBC hit show, Dragon’s Den. It was only two years ago I eagerly watched the show each week, with no idea and no business, never suspecting I’d have this opportunity. I wonder how long the line to get in will be?

Things to bring;

  1. Personality. Must be larger than life. Must be larger than life. Must be larger than life. Etc. Etc.
  2. Pig (who can resist a cute pig face?)
  3. Protein bars (non cricket based, sorry Entymo Farms)
  4. Butter tart from Doo Doo’s ( bribe for producer)
  5. Signature apron – part of my persona (really because it disguises evidence of chocolate and wine problem)
  6. Product. Duh!
  7. Phone charger – so I can watch DD episodes whilst waiting in line. Think Rocky for biz.
  8. Twitter – must Tweet experience of being in line with other weird and wacky people like me.
  9. Chocolate espresso beans. Goes without saying.
  10. Tissue. In case of humiliation. Tissue. In case they pick me. Tissue. In case I have a cold.
